Our Story — Barrios Authentic Filipino Restaurant in Halifax

The name Barrios honours the lively neighbourhoods of the Philippines — places where food is a celebration of family, friendship, and tradition. In every barrio, shared meals and recipes passed down through generations are what hold a community together. That idea has guided this kitchen since day one.

Every Sunday from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Barrios serves a full Filipino brunch — the only dedicated Filipino brunch experience in Atlantic Canada.

Where It Began

Barrios started as a food truck in 2018, founded by a group of Filipino entrepreneurs and culinary chefs with a simple mission: give Halifax an honest taste of Filipino food. The name Barrios grew out of those early years, a word that carries the spirit of neighbourhood, shared tables, and the kind of cooking that belongs to everybody.

In 2021, that spirit found a more permanent home. Barrios became the kitchen partner at Bearly's House of Blues in Halifax — running its own culinary operation inside one of the city's most storied venues. It was a turning point that brought more space, more reach, and the freedom to keep doing things their way.

By 2025, Chef Ninio was the last of the original team still at the stove. He did not step away. He stepped forward — opening Barrios at its current home on Barrington Street as his own restaurant. What started on four wheels now has a front door, a dining room, and a story worth sitting down for.

Chef Nino

Nino's path to this kitchen is not a short one. He trained at one of the Philippines' most prestigious culinary institutions, winning competitions before he ever worked a professional line. He spent the better part of his career in Singapore, cooking in luxury hotels and acclaimed fine dining restaurants, absorbing techniques and cuisines from across the world.

None of that pushed him toward fusion.

If anything, years spent in world-class kitchens only made him more certain about what Filipino cooking already is — and what it does not need to become. What Ninio has spent his career refining is not a new version of these dishes. It is the honest version of them. The adobo that takes time because that is how it is meant to be made. The kare-kare your grandmother cooked on a Sunday, the kind that fills the whole house. No shortcuts. No reinvention for its own sake. Just the food, done right — the way you remember it tasting back home.

Authentic Filipino Flavors

Growing up in the Philippines, our founders were surrounded by comforting aromas of adobo simmering on the stove, sizzling street‑food vendors and colourful markets brimming with fresh seafood and spices. These memories became a mission: to bring authentic Filipino flavours to Halifax while staying true to traditional recipes. Our menu features signature dishes like kare‑kare, crispy pata and pancit, prepared with care and seasoned with family stories. While we proudly source local Canadian produce, every dish honours its Filipino heritage—no gimmicky fusion, just genuine taste.
