Filipino Buffet in Halifax: Your Options at Barrios
If you are looking for a Filipino buffet in Halifax, what you probably want is a long table of Filipino dishes and the freedom to try a bit of everything. Barrios Kitchen & Bar, the Filipino restaurant at 1571 Barrington Street, offers that in a few ways. If you have been missing a big shared Filipino table since moving to Halifax, start with Sunday.
Sunday brunch: a Filipino brunch buffet
Every Sunday from 10:30 AM to 4 PM, our Sunday brunch is a self-serve Filipino spread. You pay one price and help yourself: $29 per adult, $15 for children 12 and under, and children 5 and under eat free. As far as we know, it is the only weekly Filipino brunch in Atlantic Canada.
For a family of four, two adults, a child of eight and a child of four, that comes to $73 before tax ($29 + $29 + $15 + $0).
The breakfast side is the same every week: tocino, longganisa, bacon and scrambled eggs, pandesal, hash browns and siomai. A soup or porridge rotates each week at the chef's choice, and arroz caldo, lugaw, champorado and ginataang bilo-bilo have all been in the rotation.
The lunch side is built from our dinner menu, with two dishes you will not find on it, and it rotates at the chef's choice, and Filipino dishes like adobo, sinigang, kare-kare, pork or chicken afritada and menudo are part of the rotation, though no single dish is guaranteed on a given Sunday. Sago gulaman and water have their own stations, and coffee is brought to your table on request, with refills.
Some Sundays are bigger. Our special brunches for Easter, Mother's Day, Christmas, New Year and Canada Day run at the same hours and prices with extra dishes such as lechon belly, and they are our busiest brunches. Reservations are recommended for every brunch, and for those ones especially.
Catering: a Filipino buffet for your event
For an event of 50 guests or more, our catering buffet is $37 per person, plus 14 per cent HST on the food and a 15 per cent service fee, which has no HST. It includes spring rolls, one side, one noodle dish, four entrées (one each of chicken, beef, pork and seafood) and three assorted desserts. In our restaurant, water and pop are included.
We can set it up in our restaurant, with three hours of exclusive use of the whole place, or at your venue in Halifax, Dartmouth and the surrounding HRM, where transportation is added, with HST on it. Give us at least one to two weeks' notice. Off-site, drinks are not included. For a smaller group that wants the restaurant to itself, call or message us about a private event.
Party trays: a buffet at home
For a party at home or in a hall, our party trays let you lay out your own Filipino spread. A family size tray serves about 5 and a party size tray about 10. Order 24 to 48 hours ahead for pickup at 1571 Barrington Street, Tuesday to Saturday 11:30 AM to 8 PM or Sunday 11:30 AM to 4 PM. We do not deliver trays, but you can book an Uber courier to collect them.
A buffet at home needs something fried, a noodle, a saucy main and rice. As a starting point for about ten people: two family-size trays of spring rolls ($40), two of pancit bihon ($70), two of roast beef caldereta ($90) and one steamed rice tray, which serves about ten ($20). That comes to $220 before tax, about $22 a head. Add pork barbecue skewers ($70 family size) if the crowd is hungry.
Tuesday to Saturday: build your own at the table
From Tuesday to Saturday we serve the regular menu, not a buffet. To get the same feeling, order a few dishes for the middle of the table and share: crispy pata ($27), kare-kare ($22), pancit bihon ($17) and pinakbet ($14), with rice.
What about kamayan?
Kamayan is a Filipino feast laid out on banana leaves and eaten with your hands. We do not run public kamayan nights. A kamayan feast can be arranged on request for a private in-house catered event, at our normal catering price, with one to two weeks' notice. Call or message us to plan it.
