Late Night Food in Halifax: What Time Barrios Stops Seating
If you are looking for late night food in Halifax, the question that matters is not who is open. It is what time you need to be sitting down. Here is how it works at Barrios, our Filipino restaurant on Barrington Street downtown.
The short version: Friday and Saturday the room runs until 11 PM and the last seating is 10 PM. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we open at 11:30 AM and close at 9 PM. Sunday is brunch only, 10:30 AM to 4 PM, and nothing after that. Monday we are closed.
So if you want a late dinner at Barrios, make it a Friday or a Saturday and be at the door by 10. That is the whole rule. Saturday nights usually have live music too, from an acoustic set to a full band.
One more thing before you plan a late night in: our delivery on Uber Eats and DoorDash stops at 8 PM, so late food from us means sitting down with us.
What last seating at 10 PM actually means
Last seating is the latest time we will put you at a table. It is not the latest time the kitchen takes an order.
On Friday and Saturday there is no fixed cut-off in the kitchen. The chef calls it, and it usually lands around 10:30 PM. Sit down at 10 and you usually have time to order properly and eat, but you are ordering a dinner, not settling in for a long night.
Turn up at 10:55 on a Saturday and we cannot seat you. Nobody on the floor enjoys that conversation. Arriving before 10 keeps you inside the last seating, though on a busy night the room can still be full, so book if you can.
Coming from a game or a show downtown
Many late tables walk in from something that has just finished. Check the end time printed on your ticket before you plan the meal, then add the time it takes to get out of the building and down the street. A packed venue empties slowly.
We are at 1571 Barrington Street. From Neptune Theatre on Argyle Street it is about a five-minute walk, and from the Scotiabank Centre about seven minutes. For anywhere else, check your route on a maps app rather than trusting an estimate from us. We would rather you had a real number than one we guessed at.
Then do the arithmetic against 10 PM. A show that lets out at 9:30 at Neptune, five minutes away, gives you room. A show that ends at 10:15 does not, and the honest answer there is to eat before the show instead of after it. From a packed arena, allow longer to get out.
What to order when the clock is running
Keep the order tight and shareable. A late meal goes better when the table agrees quickly. Prices shown are from our current menu and may change.
Pork Sisig, $20. Chopped roasted pork seasoned with soy sauce and chili, sizzling on a cast iron plate with a raw egg on top and steamed rice alongside. Mix the egg through while the plate is still hot so it cooks, then squeeze the lemon over it.
Barbecue Skewers, $15. Three Filipino-style marinated pork skewers basted in barbecue sauce and grilled to a sweet, smoky finish. They are marked gluten free on the menu.
Spring Rolls, $9 for four. Lumpiang shanghai, crispy rolls of seasoned ground pork and vegetables with sweet chili sauce.
Lechon Kawali, $19. Pork belly slow-simmered with spices, then deep-fried until the skin shatters, served with steamed rice.
Pancit Bihon, $17. Thin rice vermicelli with fresh vegetables in a light savoury sauce, with your choice of grilled chicken, crispy pork belly or shrimp.
That list is pork-heavy, which is worth saying out loud when four people walk in and one of them does not eat pork. Chicken Inasal at $22 is grilled, marinated in citrus and garlic, served with garlic rice, and there is no pork in it. Pinakbet at $14 is the plate our menu marks vegetarian and vegan-friendly: mashed squash, stir-fried beans and okra, fried eggplant and crispy tofu, made without shrimp paste or fish sauce. Torta at $12, an eggplant omelette, is vegetarian too, though not vegan because of the egg, and pancit bihon can be made with vegetables and tofu if you ask.
To drink: draught beer from $8.50 to $9.75, including Propeller Galaxy and Nine Locks Dirty Blonde, Nova Scotia wine at $12 a glass, cocktails from $13 to $15 and mocktails from $7. There is no bar counter; every seat is at a dining table.
For a group, start with a few shared plates like sisig, skewers, spring rolls and a plate of noodles, then ask your server how far that goes and add from there.
Restaurants open late in Halifax: our weeknight hours
Midweek we are not a late-night option, and we would rather say so than have you walk down Barrington for nothing. Tuesday to Thursday we close at 9 PM. The last booked table is at 8 PM, and walk-ins are seated until about 8 or 8:30, depending on the night.
If your evening runs past that, eat before it rather than after: book early enough and tell your server when you need to leave. An arrival after half past eight is a gamble. Sunday is Filipino brunch only, and Monday we are closed.
Booking a late table
For a group of eight or more, call ahead. Otherwise, book at barrioshfx.ca/reservation or call 902-444-2515. If you are running late on a Friday or Saturday, call us rather than hoping for the best.
Close to the last seating, book rather than leave it to chance. If you want to decide before you get here, the menu is online.
Hours move around holidays
Long weekends and holiday weeks can change the schedule. Over Christmas we plan to be open December 24, 25 and 31, and closed December 26 and January 1. December 31 falls on a Thursday this year, so call for our hours that night rather than assuming a late one. Treat this page as the normal week rather than a promise about one specific date, and check our Facebook page or call before you head downtown.
