Where to Eat Before and After Nocturne 2026 in Halifax

Nocturne turns downtown Halifax into a walking gallery. The art is free, there are no tickets, and the main thing worth planning is when to eat.

Nocturne 2026 runs October 15 to 18, and the main night is Saturday, October 17, from 6 PM to midnight. This year's theme is Embodied City. If you are looking for a restaurant near Nocturne, Barrios Kitchen & Bar serves Filipino food at 1571 Barrington Street, a short walk from the downtown venues.

When we are open during Nocturne

Four festival days, four different answers.

  • Thursday, October 15: open until 9 PM. The last booked table is at 8 PM, and walk-ins are seated until about 8 or 8:30. Eat early this night, because we close at 9.

  • Friday, October 16: open until 11 PM, with the last seating at 10 PM.

  • Saturday, October 17, the main night: open until 11 PM, with the last seating at 10 PM. Saturday nights usually have live music, from an acoustic set to a full band.

  • Sunday, October 18: Filipino brunch, 10:30 AM to 4 PM, at $29 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under, and free for children 5 and under. Sunday is brunch only, with no dinner service.

Should you eat before the art or after?

Both work. It comes down to how you like to run a night.

Eat first and sit down by 4:30 or 5 on Saturday. Book early enough that dinner is not a race, and tell your server when you need to leave.

Or flip it. Start with the art at 6 and come in later. A sit-down meal at 9 leaves plenty of room before the last seating. Just do not leave it until the festival ends at midnight, because we will be closed.

What to order before a night of walking

A night at Nocturne is hours on your feet outside in October, so order something that keeps you going. Prices shown are from our current menu and may change.

If the night is cold, kare-kare at $22 is the filling choice. Thick golden peanut sauce, crispy pork belly, bokchoy, eggplant and green beans, with steamed rice and bagoong, a salty shrimp paste, on the side. That will hold you for the first stretch of walking. It contains peanut and shrimp, so check with the table first.

Pork sisig, $20, arrives sizzling on a cast iron plate. Chopped roasted pork seasoned with soy sauce and chili, with a raw egg on top and steamed rice. Mix the egg through while the plate is still hot, then squeeze the lemon over it. You hear it before it reaches the table.

Spring rolls, $9 for four, are our lumpiang shanghai, thin and crisp, made for picking at while the rest of the order lands.

A pancit bihon at $17 in the middle is easy to share. Thin rice noodles with vegetables, with your choice of grilled chicken, crispy pork belly or shrimp at the same price.

For a group, crispy pata ($27) is the one to share: pork hock, simmered in spices and then deep-fried, with a soy vinegar dip. Beef caldereta ($24) is beef brisket slow-braised in a Filipino tomato-based sauce, with steamed rice.

Building a table for a group

For two or three people, most tables order one main each and something to share. For a bigger group, put a pancit and a plate of spring rolls in the middle and let people pick as they go. For a group of eight or more, call ahead.

If someone at the table is vegetarian, the pinakbet at $14 is made without shrimp paste or fish sauce and is vegetarian and vegan-friendly. The torta at $12, an eggplant omelette, is vegetarian. Pancit bihon or guisado can be made with vegetables and tofu if you ask.

Dessert

If the chef has halo-halo on as a special, ask. It is a random special, not on the regular menu, so do not count on it. It is usually shaved ice with evaporated milk, sweet beans, fruit and ube, and it is hot-weather dessert in the Philippines, so ordering one on a cold October night in Halifax is a little contrary. People do it anyway.

A simple plan for the main night

  • 4:30 or 5 PM: dinner on Barrington Street. Tell your server when you need to leave.

  • 6 PM: the installations open. Start with what is closest and work outward.

  • 9 PM: come in for a sit-down meal if you skipped dinner.

  • Midnight: the main night ends.

Nothing forces you to stick to it. There are no tickets, so the night can go where it goes. Book the table and leave the rest loose. Check the official Nocturne site for the venue map and the full program.
